Long-Term Care

Long-term care planning is an essential part of every financial plan. According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 70% of Americans over age 65 will need some form of long-term care during their lifetimes. The challenge is how to pay for it. Fortunately, there are now a multitude of new products on the market, designed for different budgets and different long-term care needs.

Medicare doesn’t pay for long-term care. Medicare provides only extremely limited coverage for nursing home and home healthcare.

Medicare Part A covers up to 100 days of post- hospitalization, skilled nursing care for patients hospitalized for more than 72 hours and who moved to a facility within 30 days.

Medicaid only pays for long-term care for the poor. Medicaid only pays for long-term care after both spouses have spent down assets. Medicaid is a form of welfare and is the safety net for millions of Americans who cannot pay for healthcare

There are Three Main Types of Long Term Care Policies:

1. Traditional LTC: In traditional long-term care polices, premiums are forfeited to the insurance company if benefits aren’t used during life.
• Return-of-premium riders are available, but because they can add more than 50% to premium costs, they have not caught on.

2. LTC life: With combination life insurance, the beneficiary can collect the death benefit when the insured dies, or the owner can access the cash value during life.
• Because of this flexibility, LTC life has soared in popularity.

3. LTC annuity: With a LTC annuity, unspent funds belong to the owner and can also be withdrawn, subject to early surrender fees, or passed on to the beneficiary.
• Annuities with LTC riders are much less available than life insurance policies with LTC riders
